These are also called "backbends" but most of these poses do not look like the rainbow arch/gymnastic drop-back many people imagine with the "b-word." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Backbends are ideal winter poses because they generate heat and lift your spirits. Winter can be a time of low energy and the blues (yet another "b-word"). Backbending/chest lifting helps counter the natural introspection and stuck/frozen feelings of the season.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are modifications using a chair/wall for most poses; for those who want to proceed into full backbends--you are welcome. It is less humid--and thus more "airy." This is a when people take on new tasks (classes, schedules, resuming work after summer vacations), so there's a lot of movement and productivity. For those growing things outside, it's the last stretch of harvest and storing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The nesting urge hits as cooler air revives us from stagnant summer heat. There's a feeling of limited time. Get it done because it will be too cold soon! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;To build some heat and help us feel grounded in this active, movement-driven time, our autumn practice will entail moderate holds and repeating poses.&lt;/b&gt; We will start practicing back bends again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eat warmer foods when the weather leans toward cool. It's soup weather, especially with gardens finishing their yields. In the photo above, we are doing some AcroYoga. I am the "base" in this photo and Corinne is "flying."
